A Care Guide for Artificial Jewellery
With a little care, hand-finished artificial jewellery stays bright for years. Here is how we recommend cleaning, storing and protecting kundan, polki and gold-plated pieces.
1. Prevent tarnishing before it begins
Most tarnishing comes from moisture, perfume, deodorant, hair spray and natural skin oils — not from the alloy itself. Make jewellery the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off.
- Apply perfume, lotion and hair products and let them dry fully before wearing.
- Take pieces off before showering, swimming, exercising or sleeping.
- Wipe each piece with a soft, dry cloth after wear to remove skin oils.
2. Storing your pieces
Air, humidity and friction with other jewellery accelerate dulling of the plating. Store pieces individually in a dry place.
- Use the original pouch or a small zip-lock bag with the air pressed out.
- Add a silica-gel sachet to your jewellery drawer to absorb humidity.
- Keep pieces apart so stones, polki and meenakari work do not scratch each other.
3. Gentle cleaning at home
Artificial and gold-plated jewellery does not like harsh chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners or polishing cloths meant for solid gold or silver. Keep it simple.
- Wipe with a clean, dry cotton or microfibre cloth after each wear.
- For light grime, use a barely damp cloth, then dry immediately and thoroughly. Never soak plated jewellery.
- Use a soft baby toothbrush to gently dust between stones — never scrub the metal.
- Avoid toothpaste, baking soda, vinegar, bleach, and silver/gold polishing solutions — they strip the plating.
4. Looking after kundan and polki
Kundan and polki are set with lac (a natural resin), which softens with heat and water. Treat these pieces with extra care.
- Keep them away from direct sunlight, hot water and steam.
- Do not soak or rinse — only a soft, dry cloth.
- Store flat in a padded box so stones stay seated.
5. When in doubt, less is more
Gold-plated and artificial jewellery is meant to be enjoyed daily. Gentle, consistent care keeps the shine for years — and when a piece eventually wears, we are happy to advise on re-plating options.
